Hands Down: Top Sexiest Game Character Ever
Link has been with me ever since I was 7 years old and my uncle gave my brother and I a Nintendo for Christmas in 1987. This little guy that you could hardly see, pixel-generated, wearing green and a funny little hat, carrying a sword too big for him, running around collecting weapons and coins, trying to save a princess named Zelda. I knew he was probably hot.
Might seem strange that a seven year old would think about something like that, but I'm not exactly average or normal, and I've never claimed to be. Link was the epitome of Hero to me then and still now. A little kid who never spoke, unknown origins, hand picked by a child princess to save Hyrule, and did so (continually) with a courage and determination unknown in my little world at the time. Maybe no one else felt that, but the fact that you could continue the game, save your progress and dutifully work on the adage "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.", meant that you could always try something a different day. It shaped my world.
As I've aged, Link has aged too. Sometimes he reverts to a kid again and back to adult, and the princess Zelda is always just out of his reach, in need of rescue again. Did anyone ever think to wonder why this kid who never spoke, who had no family, willingly risked all to save a woman and a country that had never given him anything? As the games progressed (and even a short lived cartoon for Saturday morning viewing pleasure) we find out more about Link, Zelda, and Hyrule, their enemies and allies. The Legend's universe continues to grow and expand and new generations of players are getting as sucked in as I was in my pre-teens.
I love the games, love collecting them, etc. But the part of the series that I love more than anything else, including the games, is the Hero. Link of Hyrule. A boy who risked it all because he was asked to. Now that's just damn sexy.
